Key Services
  • Excavation and Disposal
Description

The project site was on the North Apron of the active Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. We were contracted to excavate, haul, and relocate approximately 3,000 cubic metres of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil at a functioning airport apron to the site Land Treatment Facility.

Key Challenges
  • Extreme winter conditions
  • Remedial activities within a bustling airport environment
Key Solutions
  • Project executed during extreme winter conditions. Frost ripping required to commence excavation.
  • Ensured there were no interruptions to the ongoing maintenance equipment, access to fueling facilities and no disruption to the airport operations.
  • Continued maintenance to ensure snow was cleared and ice conditions on roads were mitigated using specialized sand for airport operations.

Project Scope

  • Establishment of site security and control zones, installation of aviation low profile barriers and working within Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permits (AVOPs) requirements.
  • Material transportation to overburden stockpile or on-site LTF.
  • Off-site disposal (as required) of PHC-impacted soil.
  • Supply and placement of imported drain rock and 80mm minus backfill.
