Description

Salumaq Environmental Contracting Ltd. led a challenging and strategic project to construct a Soil Treatment Facility (STF) and remediate soils at a High Arctic Weather Station in Eureka, Nunavut. Located on Ellesmere Island, approximately 1,100 kilometers from the geographic North Pole, the site’s remote location and extreme conditions posed significant logistical challenges. The team’s innovative planning and execution ensured the project’s success and demonstrated its expertise in Arctic infrastructure development.

Key Challenges
  • Sealift Logistics were limited to one annual attempt, with inherent risks from ice flows and weather.
  • Air Mobilization prosed challenging weather conditions, such as dense fog, high winds, and snow, affecting personnel transportation.
Key Solutions
  • Developed a contingency plan for air freight of critical materials if the sealift failed, ensuring project continuity.
  • Partnered with an experienced charter service and implemented rerouting plans for weather-related delays.
  • Conducted a detailed assessment of required equipment and logistics months in advance.
  • Coordinated with sealift operators to track vessel progress and ensure readiness for offloading at Eureka.
  • Successfully winterized materials and equipment post-sealift for the 2024 work season.
  • Seamless sealift mobilization and offloading at the Eureka site in August 2023.
  • Effective winterization and storage of all materials for the next work season.
  • Air transport of personnel and equipment, ensuring uninterrupted project progress.
  • Develop and submit comprehensive project planning documents for execution.
