Key Services
  • Structural demolition and hazardous materials abatement
Description

The K’omoks Milestone Joint Venture, established in 2021 through the partnership of K’omoks Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) and Milestone Environmental Inc., has successfully completed a project involving the removal of hazardous materials and the demolition of a building. KEDC, representing and managing the economic interests of the K’omoks First Nation, holds the majority ownership in this joint venture, which effectively carried out this work with one of its members joining the site crew to train and conduct site work during the demolition portion of the project.

Key Challenges
  • As the project started, the area was under a Heat Warning advisory by Environment Canada due to a prolonged heat wave that affected the entire South Coast. As a result of the heat wave, the time to perform the hazardous removal was prolonged 2 extra days, affecting the overall schedule.
Key Solutions
  • The Milestone team and the project’s hazardous abatement subcontractor implemented earlier starts to the workday to keep the workers out of the extreme heat and maintain work progression.

Project Scope

  • Hazardous materials abatement.
  • House demolition.
  • Metal and recyclable materials removal from the demolition debris.
  • Demolition debris haulage to the local landfill.
  • Demolition and disposal of the concrete basement.
  • Backfilling the excavation footprint of the former house.
