Description

Milestone was awarded a contract for the design and installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) for the Eagle River Gold Mine Complex, approximately 50 km northwest of Wawa, Ontario. The goal was to treat water from the settling pond at the discharge of the primary tailings, addressing various parameters, with a focus on copper and iron levels, to meet required effluent limits.

Key Challenges
  • Remote Location: The closest town situated 3 hours away posed logistical challenges, requiring precise coordination to ensure timely delivery of all necessary parts for commissioning on-site.
  • Extreme Winter Weather: The harsh winter conditions posed significant concerns.
Key Solutions
  • The Milestone team undertook meticulous planning and established communication channels to facilitate the transportation of equipment and materials efficiently within the remote area.
  • To mitigate the extreme winter weather, the heating design incorporated large heaters with built-in thermostats. Additionally, as an extra precautionary measure, additional temperature transmitters were installed to enable remote monitoring of building temperatures. This proactive approach ensured that adequate heating was maintained, safeguarding the integrity of the equipment, and ensuring optimal working conditions.
  • Collaboration: Milestone engaged in a lengthy design process to ensure the system met Wesdome’s needs for operation and tailings treatment. Milestone and the RO WTP Supplier incorporated day tanks fed by large chemical storage tanks to minimize daily operational needs for filling treatment chemicals. This change also added an additional container to the 5-container existing system, increasing the challenges for tying in plumbing and electrical.
