Description

Milestone Environmental Contracting Inc. was awarded a contract for the installation of a Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) in Vaughan, Ontario. The project aimed to address contamination issues caused by chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs).

Key Challenges
  • Restricted Space and Ongoing Operations
The project site was located in a tightly confined area with ongoing active operations, presenting significant spatial and logistical constraints.
  • Multiple Live Underground Utilities
The project involved working in close proximity to multiple live underground utilities, including active gas lines, hydro, water, and sewer requiring precise and cautious execution.
  • Technical Challenges and Time Constraints
The project involved a variety of technical challenges and was constrained by a tight schedule.
Key Solutions
  • Restricted Space and Ongoing Operations
    • Detailed logistical planning was essential to coordinate the excavation, soil disposal, backfill placement, and installation of the PRB wall materials.
    • Trucking schedules were strategically staggered to avoid congestion within the work zone and surrounding public areas, ensuring minimal disruption to existing operations.
  • Multiple Live Underground Utilities
    • Specialized locating equipment was used to identify underground utilities, followed by Dry Vac excavation to safely expose them. Key points along the gas lines were uncovered to allow continuous visual monitoring throughout the installation of the PRB between two live gas lines.
  • Technical Challenges and Time Constraints
    • These challenges were overcome through strategic planning, precise material placement, and fast, cohesive teamwork – ensuring the project remained on track and met all deadlines.
