COVID-19 pandemic-related work stoppage and change in contracting strategy prompt new direction for Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) work.
Port Hope, ON (June 24, 2020) – Milestone Environmental Contracting Inc. (MECI) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) have agreed to end the agreement under which Milestone was performing Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) work at the Port Hope Harbour and Centre Pier site, effective June 30. This project is the PHAI’s most complex scope and was suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic-related work stoppage and changes in contracting strategy are expected to extend the PHAI presence in the harbour area by an additional year. CNL will incorporate the many valuable lessons learned from work that Milestone has completed to date at the Harbour project in its process to complete the remaining scopes of work. In the interim, all non-essential work will remain paused on the site with only select activities undertaken to ensure that it is maintained in a safe and secure manner.
Milestone will continue to have a role in the PHAI under a separate contract to complete remaining restoration work at several residential properties. That project is underway and is expected to be finished this summer. “We’re proud of Milestone’s long-term commitment to the Port Hope community and our recent nomination for the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce 2019 Business Excellence Awards in the Manufacturing and Skilled Trades category” says Jeff Westeinde, Milestone’s Executive Chairman. Milestone maintains an office in Port Hope and has key personnel living in the area.
