HazMat Management Article – Remediating the Atlin Ruffner Mill: Promoting safety in the transformation of a remote mine site

The Atlin-Ruffner Mine Site, nestled in the remote terrain of Atlin, B.C., operated from the early 1900s to the 1980s, primarily extracting silver, lead, and zinc. After being abandoned for many years, the mine required an intensive remediation effort to address environmental hazards, including contamination of local water sources.

Uncontrolled water flow from the mine’s adit posed a risk of spreading contamination into clean water sources, while residual tailings in the sedimentation and tailings ponds were already affecting surface and groundwater quality. Given the unique risks associated with contamination and such a remote site, ensuring the safety of both the surrounding environment and the workers on site became top priorities.
