POSITION SUMMARY:
The Health and Safety Coordinator provides support in managing and maintaining the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) systems, maintaining of the training program, developing safety policies and procedures, being involved in site safety, coordinating and leading audits and inspections, tracking corrective actions and incident data, reviewing important safety documents, and other duties as required. A successful Health and Safety Coordinator is organized, flexible, attentive, and shows exceptional attention to detail.
Reporting directly to the Director of Administration, this role will be required to take direction and seek input from several managers, project managers, and other Milestone staff members.
SCOPE:
Act as a leader in HSE and be seen as the point person for assigned HSE programs and initiatives. Use safety management tools to monitor working hours, incidents, near misses and other tracked data for reporting. Report and escalate to management as needed. Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans, and statistics reports.
Demonstrate a sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals and objectives. Focused on details, highly organized and works effectively with shifting priorities and rapid change. Effectively examines events, issues, and problems to generate optimal solutions in a timely manner and contributes to a positive health & safety culture throughout the organization.

Have in-depth knowledge of provincial health and safety legislation, standards and best practices, and a demonstrated passion and commitment to being a safety leader and holding others accountable to the highest level of safety standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Periodically evaluate jobsite, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards
- Support the development of the safety training program in updating, creating, organizing, and record/recertification
- Support the maintenance of the Site Safety Plans
- Support HSE Pre-Qualification Questionnaires
- Support Subcontractor Management program
- Support the maintenance of emergency response plans and procedures
- Develop materials for and conduct new employee health and safety orientations
- Support as required HSE related concerns to inspect to ensure compliance with legislations and regulations
- Support and document accident investigations, determine cause and implement corrective actions, track, and trend. incidents
- Manage PPE inspection and maintenance program.
- Institute control measures for working with hazardous or potentially hazardous materials
- Scan and attach documents into Job specific folders
- Spreadsheet development / data entry
- Forms management
- Safety Systems management /administration
- Tabulate safety data and gather statistics for further analysis of trends
Health and Safety
- Reads, understands, and follows MECI’s Corporate Health and Safety Program, Policy, and Procedures. Ensures health and safety is considered in the performance of all activities both on and off the job. Participation in H & S initiatives will be monitored and reviewed as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Requirements:
- Diploma or Certificate in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent.
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is an asset.
- COR Internal Auditor certification required and willing to be write BC COR exam if certified in another province.
- ISO 9000 certificate is an asset.
- NHSA schooling or certification is an asset.
Experience Required:
- 2 – 5 years of experience in a Health and Safety role
- Minimum 2 years of Health and Safety experience in the construction industry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Canadian Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations, with specific knowledge of British Columbia.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, and presentation skills.
- Excellent computer skills; Office 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience with Health & Safety software (Salus, SiteDocs, WorkHub, EHS Insight or Intelex, ISN)
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is in an office environment and field visits are frequently required. Travel out of town may be required depending on project needs. A reliable vehicle, clean drivers abstract, and the ability to obtain security clearance is a must.
